ILXQuant Global Ocean Shipping and Trade Re-routing Basket Index
Fixed-basket index of 10 ocean shipping companies operating at a moment when every geopolitical disruption translates directly into higher rates. Houthi attacks closed the Red Sea in December 2023, forcing ships to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope and adding 14 days per voyage -- effectively requiring 12-15 percent more vessel capacity for the same cargo volume. Panama Canal droughts reduced throughput by 30 percent in 2023-2024. IMO environmental regulations force slower speeds, reducing effective capacity. New orderbooks are at 20-year lows because banks stopped financing shipping during COVID. The basket spans container shipping (ZIM, Matson, Danaos), dry bulk (Star Bulk, Eagle Bulk, Genco), product tankers (TORM, Scorpio), crude tankers (DHT), and ship leasing (SFL). Rebalances quarterly to equal weight.
